Constructed of 7 ply maple, Deathwish skateboard decks are strong and durable. He started skateboarding seriously when he was 12 years old, which led to sponsorships from the likes of DGK, Supra and Diamond Supply co. Not only has he gained over , followers on instagram, he also owns his own clothing company: Just Have Fun. Are dgk decks good? Asked by: Michel Barrows. So kids would just roll up in brand-new gear and… Man.

It was terrible [laughs]. Like I said, you just needed to be aware at any given moment. They had pretty much all stopped skating by then. So that was the first time DGK appeared on a skateboard. Getting on Chocolate was basically your big break, right?

When did it occur to you to start your own company? I always wanted to do my own company. Just seeing the hard work at Profile and Fit. When I got to Chocolate, I realized that that was basically an A-list brand.

Around that time [Rob] Dyrdek was starting Seek. We had talked about me riding for it. He kind of explained to me what I should be getting from Chocolate. But I always paid attention to what Dyrdek said. When did you decide to make it happen? Not too long after that I got an offer from my partner now, Troy Morgan, to have my own team, have a budget to pay my riders, and also own a piece of the distribution company that would eventually become the Kayo Corp. At the time, I was only 22 years old and I had been on a f—king roll.

Let me take it to the next level. We started the Kayo Corp. My partner at Gold, Eli Soto, was the person that actually introduced me to Troy. Switch crooked grind. Were people around you questioning the decision? Leaving Chocolate is a pretty big gamble. Everybody pretty much turned their backs on me. I had people turn their back on me before. A lot of my friends that I thought was with me because of who I was got mad at me for not skating for Chocolate anymore.

This was probably about 80 percent of the people I had befriended in the industry at that time. It helped give the push to DGK it needed and replaced the void left by the people that had turned their backs on me. Are the people that turned away from you back with you now? After a couple of years of dedication and watching me do my thing, a lot of those dudes have humbly come up to me and apologized. I believe in myself. The only thing I can do is ask them to support me and keep believing in myself, regardless of their response.

Do you still have the Chocolate tattoo? Oh yeah, I still have the Chocolate tat. Simply from the hood, and at a time when the whole industry had their backs turned on me, Rick Howard and Mike Carroll took a chance and brought me into the industry under their wing. How do you scout people for DGK? All they do is smoke weed and hang out. So we knew we had to make additions to the team but also make sure we kept it in the parameters of what we all believed in. Are there any entrepreneurs outside of skateboarding that influence the way you run DGK?

I look up to Michael Jordan. Russell Simmons. A lot of other iconic athletes that found a way to cross over into other types of business or genres from wherever they started their careers and craft from.

A lot of different things inspire me. The question is whether I can stay inspired by skateboarding. So, is DGK marketed to people outside skating?

It seems like it has a bit more of a following outside skating than most brands. But I think the newer consumers to DGK might come from other places too. Our ties are to the streets. What sets a DGK video apart from the rest? We really like to hang out with each other. We are always together. That energy is what people will see in the video, along with what we think is the best skateboarding out there. Style is everything to us. After 15 years with the brand, DGKWade, trades in his Instagram handle and parts ways with the brand to join the squad at Primitive skateboards.

It was a warm and dry place for the DGK team and friends to skate. At a time when the internet was starting to take over traditional skate media, they also let out a bunch of online clips at the park. Kalis and Williams have a long rich history together of skating in Philadelphia and being the most infamous skaters at Love Park. The two also shared a part in the Transworld Sixth Sense video.

The first Kalis graphic that DGK released was even a little dig at his old sponsor and is called the Alien abduction graphic.

In an episode of the Complex Sneaker Podcast, he said on his worst months he was making over k a month from Reebok. At the time it was the biggest skateboarding shoe deal in the history. He flew directly from the Slam City Jam contest in Vancouver, to the Neverland ranch, and picks up his mom along the way. Apparently, Chad Muska was also invited. Eventually Michael Jackson walks into the room with an open umbrella. They spend the day with MJ and he tours them around the house and chats with them.

The brand is so successful, and the other brands under Kayo are struggling at the time, so DGK is actually helping float a bunch of the other struggling brands at the time. After a little dip in sales though, everything at Kayo seems to be crumbling, and team riders are jumping ship from DGK, Expedition and Organika with complaints of not getting paychecks.

Because of this restructuring, DGK is still alive and thriving today.
