Lord Shree Swaminarayan started a seven-year pilgrimage at the age of eleven in across India. He adopted the name, Nilkanth Varni. He traveled in parts of Nepal searching for ashram which practiced pancharatra, yoga, Sankhya, and Vedanta. He believed that ashram practiced the correct understanding of the four primary schools of Hindus philosophy. During this journey, Shree Nilkanth Varni mastered Astanga yoga under the guidance of master Gopal Yogi under a span of nine months.

Shree Swaminarayan bhagwan finally settled in Gujarat around the year after nine years and eleven months of his journey.

In the year Lord Shree Swaminarayan was initiated to the Uddhav sampradaya by swami Ramanandji, his guru and was given the name Shree Sahajanand Swami. He established law and order. Lord Shree Swaminarayan restored criminals as ordinary civilians through his supernatural divine powers and preachings in Gujarat.

Before he got there, its law and order were very bad as neither the local kings nor British government was able to control all the chaos. Animal sacrifices. Shree Swaminarayan Bhagwan disliked animal sacrifices which were carried out by priests during Vedic rituals such as yagnas which were influenced by Vama Marg and Kaula.

As a means of giving an alternative solution, he conducted several yagnas where he involved priests from Varanasi. During this yagnas, no animal sacrifices were made, and Vedic scriptures were followed strictly to the letter. On completion of the 7 years' sojourn of India, the Lord met up with Ramanand Swami, and established the purest and unadulterated form of religion, based on ultimate devotion to God only, with total observance of non-violent dharma.

Shreeji Maharaj re-introduced the non-violent yagnas, on a grand scale. After the passing of Shree Ramanand Swami, Shreeji Maharaj held a large gathering of the followers at the town of Faneni. It should be noted that there was no Swami who He had appointed His successor or as an ideal devotee, at that time. Bhagwan Swaminarayan's Successors:. Gunatitanand Swami. Bhagatji Maharaj. Shastriji Maharaj. Yogiji Maharaj. Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Followers from all walks of life, of all talents and stations, of all positions and powers joined the flock of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Scholars and music maestros, spiritual seekers and spiritual leaders came forth and took initiation. Bhagwan Swaminarayan was accepted as God Himself and the way of life He introduced came to be known as the Swaminarayan Sampraday.

The word 'Sampraday' emphasizes the fact that the Movement, its philosophy and principles have been continually guided and preserved, in all their purity, by an unbroken and untainted spiritual hierarchy of enlightened Gurus. By 49, Bhagwan Swaminarayan completed His mission on earth and returned to His divine abode. Over 2 million devotees had experienced His divinity and hailed His purity. Six magnificent mandirs enshrined His spirituality and several scriptures encapsulated His knowledge.

Yet His personality, in all its totality was preserved by His spiritual successor Gunatitanand Swami.
