Temperate grasslands have some of the darkest, richest soils in the world not in wealth, but in nutrients. People who live in grassland regions often use these soils for farming. In North America we call temperate grasslands prairies. In Eurasia temperate grasslands are known as steppes and they are found between the Ukraine and Russia. In South America they are called pampas, and are located in Argentina and Uruguay.

In South Africa temperate grasslands are known as veldts. The summers are hot and the winters are cold - much colder than Santa Barbara! Rain in the temperate grasslands usually occurs in the late spring and early summer. The yearly average is about 20 - 35 inches 55 - 95 cm , but much of this falls as snow in the winter. Grassland habitats. What are grassland habitats? They are wide, open areas where mostly grass and flowers grow. Two main kinds of grasslands are tropical and temperate. Tropical grasslands are warmer than temperate grasslands. Tropical grasslands are located between the near the equator, and they stay pretty hot all year long.

Savannahs in Africa are tropical grasslands. Temperate grasslands are located further away from the equator in both the northern and southern hemispheres. They can get very cold in the winter. Grasslands can be good for growing crops and feeding livestock, so many grasslands have been used for farming. Grasslands can be found in all the continents other than Antarctica.
